When the feathers fall, good management counts.

Once or twice a year, usually in autumn, chickens molt. This is not an illness, but it is a strain. Anyone who provides peace and quiet, dry bedding, and the right support now will be rewarded with vital hens and a faster return to egg-laying performance.

What happens during the molt

  1. Protein goes into the quill.

Old feathers are shed, new ones are formed. The body puts protein into quills instead of eggs – egg production drops or pauses.

  2. Sensitive skin & pin-feeders

The new quills are sensitive. Bare patches on the neck, back, and tail are a gateway for parasites, pecking, and stress.

  3. More feathers, damper litter

Feathers and autumn moisture put a strain on the bedding. Keep it dry, provide rest, do not touch – and support the metabolism.

  4. After that, laying will start again.

How quickly this happens depends on feed, health, and rest. This is exactly where support with KE comes in.

“I have always added the herbal extract to my feed drop by drop. Since then, the chickens have been much more relaxed, calmer, and more balanced. The best part, however, is that after just one week, egg production increased significantly and has continued to this day. The eggshell is much firmer. I am completely satisfied. Top product.”

Why now?

KE-Herbal Extract: Intestines, plumage, laying performance

45 fermented organic mountain herbs via feed or drinking water. In practical observation, the monitored flock regained its strength faster and showed better vitality after molting.

3. Focus on the entire process

Dust bath: Mites meet bare skin

During molting, hens instinctively search for minerals. The dust bath with silicon minerals is especially popular during this phase.

2. A bit shorter

Cumbasil Booster: Dust bath care

The herbal booster is mixed into the dust bath and nourishes the skin and regrowing plumage – especially when there is a lot of brooding.

“The animals take to Cumbasil Mite very well! Mites have been very well contained since we started using it. It hardly produces any dust at all. I won’t be using anything else as a dust bath for my girls in the future!”

“I have been keeping chickens for many years without ever having experienced a nasty mite surprise. I use Cumbasil Mite in the dust bath, mixed with the bedding, and around the perch.”

"I don't want to use any chemicals in my chicken coop, but I still want an effective product against mites. Cumbasil Mite is 100% natural and yet super effective."

Maximum laying performance after molting. Two flocks of 158 hens each, Demeter farm Gut Ogrosen, mobile barns, identical conditions.

Eight percentage points higher laying performance after molting

Helen Mara Pluschke (Thünen Institute of Organic Farming) compared two flocks: Following a thorough cleaning, barn 2 was treated with KE ferment, and the feed was regularly moistened with KE. After the molt, the monitored flock showed a steeper increase and remained consistently above the control flock throughout the period.
